Actually, Chris , Chambers gives "center" as either the American spelling of "centre" or "a cinctum, waistbelt"
So I guess it's authentic?

im in the u.S. "Center" refers to the middle of a point. Merriam's isusually the best reference

And, as this is an English site, your spelling of centre is just wrong.
