Your letters are correct but your answer incorrect. I am a dinghy sailor but the answer (precisely confirmed in Chambers) eluded me for some time.

Your third letter should be U.
That may help fix second and fourth letters.

Is 1D ETHEL or ETHER??

I took 1d. as
ETHE(L), woman not quite, + R(ight),
so it would be ETHER, atmosphere

Solved all the clues. I'm afraid the names of some of the people alluded to in the unclued cells are eluding me. I can see a famous guitarist who was born on 19th July of the appropriate year. Is it the same day, month or year as doc? Seems like a very wide field, and, to be honest, too much Googling for my taste, so it goes in the bin unfinished. Shame.
