Thought 7D might be DISTRESS (IST - "first" in DRESS in the sense of to make smooth or "Plane")

I think, with reference to 12D and 11A, it has to be HARD. (5 from 11's = H(ARD) from THOU'S turn out OUST)

Hi skyewalker. Pretty loose clue but, going with your logic, the answer must be HAND. Taking HAND from THOUSAND leaves OUST which is the answer to 12D.
