awkward clues, please!
13 Across - "King describing wan African" FWANDAN
6 Down - "Caught, Des turned and surrendered* CEDED
14 Down - "I almost turned up for nothing!" NIL

14 the '1' looks like a line. Lin(e), ie almost, back is nil.

Yes, you're right, Steve - this compiler used "I" to signify "LINE" before!

R could = Rex
Dan is the name of one or more legendary kings of the Danes, mentioned in medieval Scandinavian texts.

therfore king dan = R dan with wan inside ?????
