I've almost filled the grid, but can't see 9d.

Then...

does each jumble indicate how separate thematic answers are entered, or do they all refer to just one thematic?

Also, for the extra word, how can the first and last letters of a set of words produce 15 letters ( an odd number?)

thanks

I thought this was a brilliant puzzle.

9d the glum character in wordplay is eeyore

Each jumble refers to one answer

Once you've seen how they apply the 15 letter issue becomes clear.

Enjoyable and not too hard except..... I have all the letters for the extra item but cannot solve it. Is it a repeated themic feature?

djawhufc, yo wrote, "Each jumble refer to one answer."

But which? is there a way of sorting out the ambiguities? For instance the penultimate jumble can apply to at least two entries, as can the second.

There is arguably an ambiguity with the jumble beginning b. However it can't really be the answer beginning with e as that is used by another thematic answer so could bet be entered as required.

I didn't notice the other ambiguity you mentioned?

Now you have me worried, DJA. I don't have any of the unjumbles relating to an answer beginning with e. The answers I have related the unjumbles to are 16A, 35D, 7A, 5D, 22D, 14A, 28D and 39A.

Hi Meursault

The second jumble goes with 35d but could go with 9d if it didn't clash with another thematic entry.

I see what you were saying now, DJA. 9D was a possible match for the second jumble, but a letter of 9D is already used by another relationship.

Struggling here, I can't parse 23a or 7d and can't solve 15d. Other than that, I have 11 extra words and 30 letters. Please tell me I am on the right tracks!
