I think that you will find that 4d is sergeant. It is an anagram of greatness minus the last s. Regeant Troy is in Midsomer murders and (I think)Hardy

thanks to everyone for the input, it was sergeant that fitted in the end. Don't know if it's me but this crossword is a bit of a b***** to answer today!
