Have trawled the alphabet inserting possible letters to fill in the blanks but no recognizable word comes to mind, never mind an answer to the clue!

41a Squander a lot of money I left? Here's an aid to cutting (4,6) - BLUE PENCIL (Aid to cutting)

I thought this was a homophone of BLEW PENCE + I L, but there's no homophone indicator, also 'Blew' is past tense while 'Squander' is present - so now I think I've completely parsed this wrong. Help appreciated.
