I made good early progress, solving about half the clues, and thinking I saw how the answers should be entered- a very simple "modification". However, I've now run into a brick wall, with several potential clashes. In particular, I don't have the solutions to 6ac and 29d - nothing seems to fit, according to my scheme. Any help gratefully received.

Dylan - as long as your "modifications" are correctly assuned then 6 and 29 are straightforward. Definition for 6 is broken set pieces - Chambers defines it as "one of a broken set". 29 is a rice drink. I don't want to give the game away by saying too much more!

I am not happy with 1dn. Surely there are two possible words that fit the clue. Say the fifth letter was unchecked.........

Unclued - I agree with you that there are two possibilities. The only way of determining which is correct is by solving 20. Not perfect but it gets the job done!

Thanks Unclued for your suggestions. I now have 6ac, but still no nearer 29d. I'm also still ignorant of the modification process - I assumed it was decapitation or de-tailing, but that doesn't seem to work. My next thought is whether the removed letters spell out something, but there's no indication of that.

Dylan - look at the ones you have cold solved and find the common element in all of them. 29 - another name for a Lapplander (4 letters) with one of the middle letters removed, followed by word for sees off (what you might say to an animal) gives you a rice drink. Hope this helps!
