Ant is involved if you remove it from a word meaning not required you get a word meaning single?

Took me a while but what a neat clue!

Two I'm puzzled by:

15a Rural reporter, male, to plot externally (3,4)
I'm not seeing how the second word is equivalent to "plot".

14d Old unchaste European singer (9)
Why "old"?

14...and where's the anagram indicator?

If the "rural reporter" is the fellow on Countryfile,
male (he) inside to ***(plot) ?
