A bit of a convoluted parsing which depends upon using 2 x N as marches = borders= first and last letters of "Nelson"

A (European) Pole (leader of "old" =) o with N at each end as already explained.

Rather too contrived a clue for my liking!

Thanks Nemo. I've never heard of marches being first and last letters. We are never too old to learn

Think Welsh Marches ie borders.
