Any pointers to the theme , or hints please?

The extra letters spell out 5 members of a group.
The name of the group should be placed at 1a
& 37a.
The name of the 6th member must be shown below the grid.
A famous comical routine by No 6 will lead you to the theme.

How do 9 extra letters spell out 5 members of the group?

It is the extra letters (27)from the normal clues that provide the 5 names in the group.

For example -you asked about 6d - T (C)arboys
Tarboy = shearer & carboy = bottle.

The 9 clues without definition, although entered into the grid as non-words, make sense when readin conjunction with 20a and the actions of the 6th member of the group (Prime Mover)

I should have made clear that C was the surplus letter in the example.

And can you help K by telling me if the unclued entries are synonyms for walks or silly - or neither? Thanks

Yes they are all 'silly' words for walks.

Hope we are not spoiling it for others, although I don't think many people do this one.
