I wondered if that was the full clue, as there seems to be a homophone indicator missing.
A diplomat can be an envoy, and an 'envoi' is an author's final words - so one is a 'sound- alike' of the other... unless 'words' is also being used as the indicator. Does 'envoy' it fit with your other letters?

Just checked, and Chambers gives "envoy" as an alternative spelling of "envoi" (last words), so no homophone indicator needed.
Sorry to have made it overly complicated..
