Is there mistake in the clue for 1d?
It looks like an anagram but it doesn't quite work.

There's no E in immigrants!

As no-one else has come forward I assume it's an error.

On another crossword site the answer was posted as Emmigrants using the E .. but there's inly 1 M in Emigrants, and 1 I. Maybe in clue "leaving in shreds" refers to leaving the E (middle of shreds). Many thanks all :-)

I took 'in shreds' as the anagrind. There's a mistake which ever way you look at it as emigrants only has 9 letters and emmigrants is wrongly spelt.
