Too right I need help!! Other than 1 across (nambypambies) I cannot get my head to work this morning and I usually finish this crossword. Probably too much red wine last night - papers a day late here!! 4 down could help get me going as would 2,3,5,6,7,8 and 9. Doh!!!

Glad to see the comments. I have been completing Mephisto for more years than I care to remember, and this must be the first time I've failed. I need 17 across - to??e, and 8 down. The definitions are too obscure.

Hi Audrey,
17a TOGUE,which is the Great Lake char what that has to do naff off is beyond me!
8d INANGA IN+(t)ANG+A A fish from Australasia.
Tang is coarse seaweed minus the T = ANG. If I
am correct,I think these clues are a bit tenuous.
Very best regards to you,
Jerry

TONGUE is the language (less N - the beginning to naff)
