6d Instrument depicting liberty-taking pacifist who's given an inch?
The answer is obviously 'cello', but why?
Similarly, 8d Meat that's off shoulder picked up along with leg.
= carrion. On in cricket is leg, but shoulder is carry, not carri can someone parse this for me?

8d "picked up" is a "sounds like" indicator - "carri" sounds like "carry"

I don't see the other one. What letters do you have placed?

CO is "conscientious objector", I suppose, but I don't think an "ell" is an inch

Just come across the expression "give him an inch and he'll take an ell", so all is now clear. Many thanks to everyone.

On a different subject - I won the Jumbo No 1255. Do you think this diminishes my chances of a win in the future? In other words, if my entry came first out of the hat, would they recognise the name and pick another one?

I do hope not. I won the Mail on two consecutive occasions last year...so I believe that their selection is truly random.
