Thanks, Syzygy, really enjoyed this one. Favourites were 17&44a, 3, 16, 18,27d.
1a was my second last in, though guessed the theme from 7d earlier.
Not sure about 6d. I have L?NO.
I notice a couple of spelling differences with US/English English in 10&35d.

Jay Leno was a late-night talk-show host.
I did think that a few of the spellings might throw non-US solvers off a bit.

Glad you enjoyed it.

What I always find interesting is which clues people liked.
My faves: A - 13, 19, 20, 29. D - 6 **, 27, 42.
** Thanks, Aristo. An all-time classic poem.
I just flipped when I read that clue, figuratively & literally. (-;

Good one, Mattrom. The (l)lamas appear frequently, in various forms.
A lot of American stuff, unfortunately for UK solvers, but I frequently struggle with British, Scottish, Irish, Welsh references in the their puzzles. Have learned a number of cricket terms though.

Cheers.
