T?M?D looks like it must be TIMID to get shrinking but if so don't see the parsing

1a "Recording capital exchanges, party fudges ledgers" (9)

C?S?B?O?S

Looks like it must be CASHBOOKS to get ledgers but again can't see the parsing

Any help much appreciated

1a: I have "cashbooks", too but couldn't fully parse it.
cooks = fudges, but cannot see the rest......

How about exchanging the first letters (capitals) in party (bash) fudges (cooks) and recording it (writing it down). Hope this helps.
