Help with my last clue, please!

29a Die is cast in Scotts's work (6) ?E?N?N

Could be pennon, Lennon, Memnon or Vernon.

Paul Scott, or Walter Scott or someone else - but I'm not coming up with anything.

Any help would be much appreciated so I can move on !

There is a Lady DIANA VERNON Beauchamp in Walter Scott's Rob Roy, so might be a play on Di(e).

I saw this train of thought on Answerbank, but it relies on Di being misspelt, and also doesn't explain the cast bit - unless to say that Diana Vernon is in the " cast " of the novel.
