This one looks a bit dodgy....or I Could be being daft:

Leader is f excavation in ancient city, keen to break out spades, as just what's needed.

Thebes is the ancient city, keen is anagrammed and I think there's an other 'e' from the start of 'excavation', plus an S for spades.

It's easier for helpers to read if you use ??? for blanks.
