Hi James.

This may be lace (as in 'spike' or 'lace' a drink).

I'm not sure of the exact wordplay - but there are exciting high-heeled boots called 'lace heels' available for purchase.

I'd agree with LACE for 'spike'. It's L+ACE:
'heel - heel' gives the last letter of heel = L
'long (ACHE) less high (H) gives ACE
Hope this helps!
Can anyone explain 11 Across?

Thanks for the explanation Stronon.

I'm sorry but I don't have the crossword, so have no idea on the clue or answer for 11ac.

Hi JimC

11Ac: Le Carre character - one good agent!
(the second e has an acute).

I think the solution is CAUSE but I can't explain it.

Could this be an option - not sure of the wordplay but Karla is a gent(not a lady)

Karla is a fictional Soviet intelligence officer in several novels by John le Carré. He most often appears as a distant antagonist of George Smiley. His real name is never revealed; instead he takes his codename, a woman's, from that of the first network he recruited.

Hi again.

Here's some thoughts ...

'Le Carre character' = the letter 'c'.
'one = 'a'
'use' = 'good', as in 'of use'

'cause' = 'agent'.
