I should have realized 1D was in the present tense & couldn't see 15 for looking - rather hung up on the notion of "Miranda".

39a Hostility from soldiers escaping outrageous act (6) - ENMITY (Hostility)

I thought this might be a word meaning 'Outrageous act' minus 'Soldiers', but the only thing I can think of is 'Enormity' minus OR which is more of a description of an act rather than an act itself so I think I've gone wrong somewhere.
