Clue:

Pattern: -A-K
and

Round number backing team leader when clear of charges
Pattern : N-T-

Of course I can find numerous words that will fit both situations, but can't work out how they match the clue.
Ideas?
I know I'll suffer the "D'oh" moment but appreciate the assistance.

That's the damn thing with cryptic, isn't it!. You sit there puzzling, and when the answer is pointed out, you wonder why they hell you couldn't see something SO obvious!
