I got the highlighting from noticing things above and below the blank square - one's going up, one's going down. If you follow these, you'll see it all.

Thanks - got those 3 - do you agree the extra letter in 23d is A rather than T?

I've got a T as the extra letter in 23 D - it comes from the very last word of the clue (ie the answer to that).

No it makes something you would visit in one of the 3 countries you are touring.... if you have your line drawn in , look down the diagonal inside your line
