Gray matter's term (American) for something on the brain(5)G?RU?. If "GYRUS" is correct, please explain 'GYR'.

It's gyrus, but that's not quite the reasoning.
It's Gy (Gray - the SI unit) + r (term, ie end, of matter) + US, American.

All in Chambers.
