and - why Turandot for 'Opera act conceals a little spot'. I understand the 'dot' but what has 'turan' got to do with it?

Finally 16a 'Repeatedly equalling two profits? (5,3,5) is probably the same word either side of the word 'and' - but what?

Turn = an act on stage (star turn etc) with an "a" inside it.

and the answer to the first one is SCOUR (Part of diSCOURage)also means comb

18 down. Trevor is correct. Leave QUIT ring inside O makes the ring QUOIT.
