I had a quick look at an alphapuzzle online, and it was far from clear how you would use the clue given to help fill the grid. How does it work?

The grid looks just like a crossword, but no clues. Each square has a number inside that represents a letter. The Daily Star always gives you a cryptic clue to which answer fits in puzzle. Answer to this mornings cryptic was Wallop so I just look for 6 spaces with two numbers the same as there are 2 Ls in Wallop ,also they give you a letter to get started with its corresponding number( today's was W ). So for example W27754, the 7s are the Ls

Thanks deepseabob
I've done alphabeticals before, but with no clues whatsoever, just two or three letters given in the number grid. Can be a bit tricky to get started!

I think those are called "codewords" Chris.
I love them especially when only one letter is given.
The Mail and RT has them, and Saturday Times.

Yes, that's the term, jazzy. I sometimes attempt the RT one.
