Hi Robert,

i can only really explain 43D, as i am unsure on the rest. the answer is "heighten" as you suggested. "eight" being the figure, and "hen" being the chicken.

clues >

9a. Gosh, this the result of shelling? (6)
44a. Classy line European has in mind - this running on it? (5,6)
49a. Grandma Moses is partial to a book. (4)
56a. End in sight, dear old fruit! (7)
43d. Raise figure, as chicken-feed? (8)

I would add, "amos" is hidden in the clue for 49a, but I dont have a better explanation than that.

"Bullet train" ... could be explained ... U(upper class) + L(abbreviation for line) + Lett (=Latvian) all conatined within BRAIN(mind).

56a. End in sight, dear old fruit! (7)

This could be ... T (end letter of 'sight') + ANGEL ('dear', term of endearment) + O (abbreviation for 'old') making, as you have, TANGELO.
