Tricky, tricky! Another one where you plough through all the stages, all of which are challenging and interesting, to discover the final final clue and then ... can't find the damned 4-letter word, even though I know what it must be. Took me back though! Aah! the seventies!

If you remember the seventies you weren't.... Oh no, that was the previous decade.

I've ransacked the grid for the expected four-letter word, and indeed for the area, but I can't spot either. Given the skill and tortuousness of all the steps up to here, I'm sure there's at least one more step that I'm missing.

I'm finding these clues VERY strange. There must be a reason for this which I shall no doubt discover later. e.g. "Arty grottoes" giving ANTRES in 23. I would appreciate a hint for 1 across - I still have an awful lot of clues to solve!

The grottoes are 'arty' because ANTRES is a poetic term.

1a: Def is the first part of the clue. Wordplay is a 3-letter tree preceded by a 3-letter acronym for a Scottish sporting event.

Can someone explain the wordplay to 5acr?

It's supposed to sound like Job (as in Biblical book) and low (on the cheap) I think

I/m struggling with the parsing of 41. The def is clear, but the wordplay yields nothing. And this might just be where the treasure is lurking'

Can someone tell me if the positioning of 'mi' in the grid is significant? Thanks

Geographically, it could be, but I don't see where to go from there.

I tried playing with AM, IS, -ARE -- but couldn't get anything out of that either.
