17ac Manage to get hold of crocodile's tail (4) ?O?E I had RUNE but this doesn't fit with 7 down. Silly but I can't get my head round this now.

34d Yarn put favourable slant on QC (4,4) S??? S?L? Ii thought it was
SHOT SILK but can't fit this with 39ac.

39ac Far from hardest place to find vicar swallowing pills (8) I have
???P?E?T. I thought it was SIMPLEST but this doesn't fit.

Totally bamboozled now.

Pulpiest - pulpit around Es (drugs)

Spun silk? Cop +E ?

Spun (put favourable slant on) silk (QC)
