My answer, which fits 'flowers', ignores the 'gaudy-day'. I have a usual abbreviation at the start, then a word for 'cuckoo', not the bird, is shortened ('cut').

I've had a full grid for 24 hours, and I think I've identified the two "other symmetrical" entries ... but I can see no connection, even of the MSSNG VWLS variety, with the 4 round the edge. What am I missing?
