Can anyone help with the parsing of these.....

I see the anagram of 'My pals', but that leaves 'ATE' which I can't get from 'Had to be' (assuming 'Kept in' is the containment indicator) - clearly I'm missing something, but what?

6d Neglected female obtained American soldiers for cuddling (9) - FORGOTTEN (Neglected)

I think 'Obtained might be 'Got', but that's about it.

Brendan, in 1 D I think Ate is 'had'.
6 D, I think 'gotten' is the American for Had, along with the F for female and the OR /other ranks, for soldiers.

F(emale) OR (soldiers) gotten (Obtained, American term)
