I have completed the grid but have some redundant letters missing I think, so I can't understand the preamble. Anyone out there willing to tell me if I should persevere?

Jogamel, I have the full Message 1 but trying to decipher what it means- something to do with today's date perhaps ? V. Cryptic !

The message tells you to refer to something on page 53 of the i newspaper. Do something there and make the connection to get 7 words. I've followed the instruction they give (I think correctly) but then I am stumped trying to get something meaningful from the top left to the bottom right. Boris anyone? (Also I can't get 40a.)
