Help needed please with last one in:

38d "Eccentric writes verse with no beginning or end: one of 51?" (9)

R?S?R?I?T Looks like RESERVIST ie anagram of writes and verse omitting w and e, but where does the 51 fit?

The 51a answer is THETA so doesn't appear to relate to this, Could it be the 51 states of the USA (although I thought there were only 50), but even so not sure how this ties in with RESERVIST?

Any thoughts much appreciated

The ta = territorial army ( reservists)

the answer to clue 51 is theta - the ta - i.e. reservists
