Have I got something wrong here? 8d is "The worship of one god without excluding belief in others" (9) That gives me a perfectly satisfactory word that fits the crossers and ends in "ry". However, in order to fit with 21a (which is the first name of Jimmy Carter's Secretary of State ----- Vance) 8d has to end in "er". Surely that means "One who worships etc" rather than the practice itself?

Yes. That's what I had. But to fit with Cyrus it has to be entered as Monolater.

Monolater is "one who worships......."
Not "the worship of....."
