ALSO: 7d: recoils from beetle found in sports jacket. I have ?HI?S
I am struggling to find the first phrase due to these little so and so's

1 A. Hate
1 D. Oared , like something one might row. (O, love, Ad, publicity, Re, about - or something similar.)

I wonder if 7d is SHIES, but I cannot explain the word play.

Orson, I've got Shies in my completed grid - it fits 'recoils' in the clue but I have no idea how the rest works.

Thank you both, I had all those answers but could not parse. And I can't find a phrase. Can either of you help out there at all?

Orson - I think Hie = beetles, moves fast and it's inside S port S.

The answers for 1 A and I D give you a good start to the phrase and 7 D gives you another letter. Do you still have a few answers to get?

I think now that to beetle means to hurry along and so hie; and then sports jacket is SS (the jacket - outside - of the word sports).
