Have completed crossword, all except for 42 Across. Only two words seem to fit, - compleat, and camelias, - neither of which make sense( to me, anyway). I think US reference may be CAN, I cannot incorporate this into any answer
Thanks for such a speedy reply. I see now that the reason for my impasse was that for 43 Down I had MIGRANT, instead of the ( obviously correct) VAGRANT. A sign of the times perhaps!
