This is to do with leap years (one summer day = adding,as in a sum,one day)

I'm pretty sure the answer is correct but I can't explain the whole clue. It seems a bit clumsy to me.

the Julian calendar was used prior to 1582 before being replaced by the Gregorian calendar. i.e. a medieval period.
The rest of the clue.... Jul 1 (July 1st, one summer day) + any (some) ear (attention).
