I have squeezed this Bank Holiday xword on an A4 sheet: http://bit.ly/2bqabfU

Sorry if there are serious errors - there'll be no time to correct them today.

I'm struggling to grasp what is required by the special instructions here. Can anyone walk me through a single solution so I can get a handle on the process?

37d answer is chief guide (defn of Valerie Le V)
word play has chide ((to scold) with i u (independent union) inside
The consecutive rub EFG is missing from the wordplay

Thanks Bunty that confirmed my feeling. so that clue was a no brainer if you knew who the heck Valerie de Volestrangler is with ponderous clueing of "chuide" still leaving you floundering for the missing riff for the rest of us
repeat NO FUN

Maybe I am being very dim, but 37d is linked to 38d. So how can Chief Guide be the only answer? The letters given are 5, 5 4-4.
A very obscure Crossword this one.

berg hill
All the clues have to be separated into two. The paired solutions are not linked to each other.

Thanks for giving me one answer and pointing me in direction of another (though I've never heard of Berg Hill).
I worked out the directions, but am struggling with the answers. I have got some.
I'm hoping a glass of white wine will give me inspiration.
