4D - Smooth pitch for instance & run (6) G?R?E? I suspect it is GARNET but cannot parse. TAR (pitch) & EG (for instance) but where does the N come from?

I also have GARDEN. It's a cricketing term for when the batsman pretends the pitch is inadequate by tamping down the invisible mounds!
