I'm not happy about 12ac. Surely a case can be made for FAR or RAF as the final entry or am I missing something?

What is the clue?

12 A. Miles away from returning service (3)

NB. Several clues contain an extra letter that must be removed before solving. (It doesn't look as if this clue's affected, but I've included the info anyway!)

What part of the clue does "returning" refer to?

Far = returning RAF

....or "miles away from" returning to give RAF! I dislike these ambiguous clues.

Me too and I guess A is your only crosser! I'd still stick with far though.

If it's any help I've gone for FAR because RAF would be an abbreviation and they are usually mentioned in the preamble but not in this case. Could always be RAF though!!

I've gone for FAR so that for 7d I have ?RE?U? If it's RAF there seems to be no word that would fit, but then of the few words that would fit 7d, none of them seems to satisfy the clue. I think 7a begins with B but I cannot parse it (BO for man but then what?)
