Um, how does anyone feel about 5A? Something inside me rebels against being told who and who not to regard as "the enemy", especially by a crossword setter. I don't care if the "enemy" in question is a group as pernicious as the Taliban, or the KKK or whotever. I don't think this is the right place to be putting what really amounts to a political opinion.

First of all, your b is wrong.Subject of carol - htink of a Dickens book. Then we have raised 16 - your answer of 16 should be EGO, then "killers" - think whales. You should get it with this.

Hi AJT - I was thinking Tolkien baddies when I completed that one - Whale connection fits better though

Hello Ixion - I don't know how to confess this, but I've never been able to read "Lord of the Rings" -not keen on fantasy.

Read it as a kid(not as soppy as the film) - did have to throw in the towel with The Silmarillion though!

I've known people who read it every year! My preferred reading might be cookery books - or a well- written detective novel.
