I have gotten a few answers and don't yet know the theme. But 11A seems to be Bertram (Ber + Tram).
That seems to be one of the 20 so need to find out who Bertram is. I do have down answers for B and M.

After looking at this on and off for a couple of days, I've got as far as two three letter answers and I'm not convinced about one of those... I wonder how AJT is getting on?

Here I am SimonGthanks for wondering, and the answer is - not very well, so I'm relieved to hear I'm not the only one. The only ones I've got are 24d -d - rag-ons (for that -because of dons, I tried to make 20d uni, but can't see it) 14ac idi -idiot without "to", 19d ria - drowned valley, and 29 ac - rue. Not much help
As for the theme - first of all I wondered if it could be insects - dragons, and an anagram of 30ac could be Diptera. Is it worth considering that they're all 7 or three letters?

Press on!

Good to hear from you AJT (and dizoz) - don't misunderstand me but I'm glad to hear you're also struggling!

At this stage I think all I can add is 17d which may be SIR - based on 'risk' less K, but I do think is a little contrived...

Oh well, back to it...

Hello again SimonG - With "Bertram" I'm wondering about names. Another anagram of 30 ac (pirated) could be Perdita.
What enthuusiasts we are - just after 7am and we're agonising over a crossword!
