Annoyingly, stuck on last one - there must be something blindingly obvious I'm not seeing.

I conclude this is CATTARO but apart from this being a City in the Kingdom of Dalmatia in the Austro-Hungarian Empire am quite at a loss for any other explanation.

Cattalo, a cross/hybrid. Cato is the famous Roman, TA is the army and L is the line.

... a hybrid of Buffalo/Bison with domestic cattle.

I had cattalo and now I know why, so thanks Malone. I have a few to do in the top LH corner

Thanks for the explanation. I was on the wrong track, but nothing came up with CATTALO.

I'd worked out CATO & TA, & just assumed that in the mind of the setter R would do for line - Radius, maybe?
