I take zozozo's point about both being synonyms of "guide", but I'm struggling to think of a sentence in which "lead" could be replaced by "steer" (or vice versa) and retain the same meaning.

btw I looked at where I could watch the end of the cycling when I got in today, only to find that it was all over!
