I have a problem with the definition here?
8a: Check a doctor is Polish (7)
The answer is chamois
ch - check
a
MO - doctor
is
"Chamois" could mean "PolishER" but how so "polish"?

Thank you for your response.
I 've looked this up in both Chambers and The Oxford English, and both dictionaries only give "chamois" as a noun.
I should be interested to read your reference, please?

I see that this is from Collins, but ...........

"transitive verb definition. A verb that needs a direct object to complete its meaning. Bring, enjoy, and prefer are transitive verbs."

I still wouldn't describe "chamois" as a transitive verb?
Odd that it isn't defined as such in Chambers or the Oxford.

Ah well.....

Polish can be used as a transitive verb in exactly the same way.
