Clue: Crowds with crosses in which 9 nearly died (10)
The answer is MULTITUDES but I have no idea how it relates to the clue apart from the word "crowds". The answer to 9 is OATES, and that doesn't help either.
Is there a wise owl in a tree
Who can explain it to me?

"Crowds" is obviously "multitudes", as you say, for the overall answer. "Crosses" is (or should that be "are?")"mules", which are obviously crosses between horses and donkeys, "nine" being "Oates" makes this almost "Titus" ("titu") + "d" for "died", all of which goes inside of "mules". Aracaria can be a clever old devil!

Thanks for cracking the code, Paul. Araucaria often has me baffled, even when I have the solution right in front of me.
Cheers
