Black lead with American Director's finale of Hamlet(4)WAD? The obvious answer is 'wadt', but I can't find any definition of this word. Since the finale of Hamlet is death, could the answer be 'wadd'? My limited sources give wad with one 'd' as meaning black lead! Please help!

Apropos of nothing, I've just had a postcard delivered telling me have I've won The Mephisto.

My name wasn't in yesterdays Times, and the crossword club site seems to be down at the moment, so I don't know whether its the almanac or cash that I've won.

Cheers sudokulover, shame its not one of the big £1000 or £1500 crossword prizes, but as they say - every little helps.

Thanks AJT. Could you please confirm that the Chambers definition is black lead?

It is indeed. And to the Mephisto winner above: You won't know until the prize comes, and it's usually 2/3 weeks after receiving their notification.
