I have solved the clued lights and now wrestling with
the unclued ones.
It doesn't help that Doc is using Brewer yet again!

Can anyone please confirm (or otherwise) that my placed
letters for 44a are correct as I can't make a word from
the letters? I have ?RO???ODE

yes letters are correct ... this is the 2 worder (5,4)........... think road safety!

I didn't read the preamble properly & missed the reference
to a two word solution.

Thanks to SL's tip I have got 44a but I just cannot find
a word in the grid to precede it.

Another hint would be much appreciated.

It's in a diagonal over the right hand side in direction NW to SE if I remember correctly......took my grid downstairs so not got it to hand.......

If you use the search facility and navigate to Speccie 2244, post 18: harlequin provided a link to an archived copy of Brewer's which you may find useful (Doc is obviously using a more up to date version but this contains all but 1 of the unclueds).
