I have completed the grid and know the name of the author but not the theme and therefore unable to identify the four thematic clued answers which need highlighting. Would very much appreciate a big hint so I can get this wrapped up.

One of his book titles is a clued light (9). The other three are characters in that book. My copy is in the recycle but I think the title is sort of two thirds down and to the right.

If you Google the author, the origin of the quote should come up. That's one thematic answer and if you investigate/Google further, you should get the other three.

An across clue for the title. The others are the two threes and a six letter solution.

Thanks, Farr - my hint seemed rather meagre really! I always try not to give away too much, but maybe I give too little.

When I need a clue I prefer a meagre one so maybe my hints are too generous but Farr did ask for a big one.

I have completed the grid - except one doubt "Byte" or "Bite" ? Is there a parsing convention here ? Grateful for a resolution of my doubt.

I went with .......smart is the defn so bIte for the actual answer....- data unit "we hear" gives the bYte (sounds like our answer)
