Hi all. could any of you fine people help me to parse 13Ac. Longer version of a river before each round.(4) AR?A. AREA? also 37Ac. Once before, forge as precursor to austerity. RI?OR. RIGOR? thank you.

Area, a longer version of "a"
r = river with [a (ante) = before + ea = each] round

Forge = rig + before = or (old usage).

The problem with this clue is that 'longer version of a' does not define 'area' - even as wordplay 'for example' would be required as 'a' can abbreviate many other words.
